About Volunteering for the Rowi Project
Volunteering with the rowi team will mean being outdoors, requires a good level of fitness, and the ability to walk/tramp for at least a couple of hours.
Most volunteer opportunities are more than one day in duration, up to five days, and can include help with monitoring the birds, health checks, egg rescues and more. You may be volunteering at the sanctuary at Okarito, or on one of the islands, depending on the work available!
As a volunteer you will need to provide your own transportation to Franz Josef (on the west coast of the South Island) and should have sturdy footwear/tramping boots and suitable clothing for outdoor work. You will also be responsible for providing your own food and accommodation while volunteering.
In return, you will have the opportunity to work alongside the team working to save our rarest kiwi, and to acquire some real hands-on conservation knowledge!

In 1906, a Scottish-born inventor developed a revolutionary new shoe polish. He called it Kiwi polish. It was used by the British and American armies during World War I, and soon New Zealand soldiers became ‘Kiwis’.
