26 Kiwi to be Released on Motuihe Is

Motuihe Island in Auckland’s Hauraki Gulf Marine Park is set to welcome the largest and final group of up to 26 endangered little spotted kiwi this week.

The kiwi will travel from Kapiti Island, joining the original 14 birds released last year to make a population of 40 breeding adults.

A new dog has joined the Department of Conservation’s (DOC) rowi kiwi team to help save this critically endangered species.

Starting young—from about eight weeks of age—Rein is a very enthusiastic Hungarian Vizsla, brought on board by DOC in Franz Josef to find rowi without the use of transmitters.

Okarito Fires REWARD offered

Following last week’s spate of deliberately lit fires in the Okarito Kiwi Sanctuary, concerned local individuals and businesses have posted a reward for information that will lead to a conviction of the offender.

A total of $5600 has been pledged and the figure is expected to climb.
