Hawke's Bay
About four community-led kiwi groups are under way in the Hawke’s Bay region.
This site introduces three that receive money from BNZ Save the Kiwi Trust:
- Maungataniwha Kiwi Project
- Environment, Conservation and Outdoor Eduction Trust (ECOED)
- Cape Kidnappers and Ocean Beach Wildlife Preserve Partnership
Kiwi species
These groups are working to help save the brown kiwi – specifically the form known as eastern brown kiwi.
Kiwi sanctuaries and mainland islands
Of the five kiwi sanctuaries managed by the Department of Conservation, the one closest to Hawke’s Bay is at Tongariro.
Two of the Department’s six mainland islands are near Hawke’s Bay – Northern Te Urewera and Boundary Stream. These are places where introduced pests are intensively managed to help protect kiwi.
Seeing kiwi
In the Hawke’s Bay region, captive kiwi can be seen at the National Aquarium of New Zealand in Napier.
The nearest opportunity to see wild kiwi is the Pukaha Mount Bruce National Wildlife Centre, in the Wairarapa. You may also see kiwi if you volunteer to help the local kiwi groups.
