Ranger doing field work with a kiwi and giving kiwi a helping hand
About four community-led kiwi groups are under way along the East Coast.

This site introduces two that receive money from BNZ Save the Kiwi Trust:

Kiwi species

These groups are working to help save the brown kiwi – specifically the form known as eastern brown kiwi.

Kiwi sanctuaries and mainland islands

Of the five kiwi sanctuaries managed by the Department of Conservation, the one closest to the East Coast is at Tongariro.

Two of the Department’s six mainland islands are near the East Coast area – Northern Te Urewera and Boundary Stream. These are places where introduced pests are intensively managed to help protect kiwi.

Seeing kiwi

The closest place to see captive kiwi in the East Coast region is the National Aquarium of New Zealand in Napier.

You may see kiwi if you volunteer to help the local kiwi groups.

Did You Know?

Kiwi sleep standing up.  They tuck their head and shoulder under their tiny wing stump, or at least in that general area.  It’s not always fun to be flightless.
