Bay of Plenty

This site introduces two that receive money from BNZ Save the Kiwi Trust:

• Whakatane Kiwi Trust
• Otanewainuku Kiwi Trust

Kiwi species

These groups are working to help save the brown kiwi – specifically the form known as eastern brown kiwi.

Kiwi sanctuaries and mainland islands

Two of the five kiwi sanctuaries managed by the Department of Conservation are close to the Bay of Plenty – Moehau and Tongariro.

As well, two of the Department’s six mainland islands are close to the Bay of Plenty, Northern Te Urewera and Boundary Stream. In mainland islands, introduced pests are intensively managed to help protect kiwi.   

Seeing kiwi

In the Bay of Plenty, captive kiwi can be seen in Rotorua, at Rainbow Springs and at the New Zealand Māori Arts and Craft Institute.

The nearest opportunity to see wild kiwi is through Kiwi Encounters run by Whakamanu Wildlife Management.

You may also see kiwi if you volunteer to help the local kiwi groups.
