Take action to help save kiwi – If you live near or visit places where wild kiwi still survive, there are many things you can do to help protect these special birds.

If you own a dog, always keep it on a lead and have it undergo kiwi avoidance training. Cat owners can help kiwi by keeping these nocturnal hunters inside at night.

There are many things that landowners, farmers and forest owners can do to protect any kiwi on their land.

If you hunt or set traps in places kiwi live, how you go about your business has a big impact on the birds. All hunting dogs should go through kiwi avoidance training.

More than 60 community-based groups work to help protect kiwi, from Northland to Arthur’s Pass in the South Island. Together they protect about 50,000 hectares of kiwi habitat. The longest running is Project Kiwi on Coromandel Peninsula.
