Avoidance training is a tool to help reduce the threat dogs pose to kiwi
From the far north to the deep south, excellent progress is being made to protect young kiwi from stoats, cats and other predators. But dogs are still a big problem, especially for adult birds.
You can find out why dogs are such a big problem for kiwi here.
If you own a dog – whether a family pet, farm dog or pig hunter – you can read about the many ways you can help keep kiwi safer here.
If you use dogs when hunting, there’s more information about what you can do here.
Quite simply, kiwi and dogs don’t mix. Dogs that roam kill kiwi. But we can make a difference.
Training dogs to avoid kiwi
One of the best things dog owners can do is train their dogs to avoid kiwi altogether. And that’s what this section of the website is about.
In this section
Kiwi are the only bird with external nostrils at the tip of their bill - just like a nose. The kiwi's sensitive nose can locate an earthworm up to three centimetres underground.
