The actions taken to protect kiwi are many and varied – ranging from creating whole new populations, to putting in place innovative animal pest control techniques, to restoring natural habitats.

Actions can be national, regional or specific to a species or topic. They can be lead by communities, iwi, private landowners or agencies. They are the core of our work to help kiwi species recover.

In the early days, the focus was on creating new safe populations, mostly on island sanctuaries. The main challenge now is to save kiwi on mainland New Zealand.
