Tim Shaw

Tim Shaw
After two-to-three years of providing a West Coast perspective to the Department of Conservation’s Kiwi Recovery Group, Tim Shaw officially joined its ranks in 2008, representing the two South Island kiwi sanctuaries at Okarito and Haast. These contain the nationally critical kiwi species – rowi and Haast tokoeka.

Why kiwi?

Tim moved to the West Coast from the Nelson region, drawn by the opportunity to work in biodiversity conservation.  ‘Kiwi came with the territory,’ he says.

High point

His high point in kiwi conservation was handling a bird for the first time. ‘I can't remember where or when, but it was nice.’

Low point

So far so good; no low points to report.

Thoughts for the future

‘They're in the very best of hands.’

Did You Know?

Many kiwi die during night-time hunting sprees by dogs.  If you live near a kiwi area and own a dog, don’t let it run free at night – keep it tied up or indoors.
