Understanding the technology:

As you will have seen in Sniffs stories, Pete uses radio technology to track down birds hidden in the bush. This operates by tracing the radio signal transmitted by a small band attached to a kiwi's leg. Pete holds the detection device and points it in different directions to determine the location of the bird.

Research about how radio transmitters are used to monitor and trace animals in various parts of the world. The Internet would be a good starting point, using a search engine such as Google and entering keywords like radio, collar, tracking, tracing, monitoring, and animal. Try to find what sort of uses the radio transmitters are put to in different parts the world. An example of how a radio transmitter collar is used in the conservation of different breeds of  wolves can be found at: www.kidsplanet.org, and another example of how schools are involved and tracing the migration patterns of swans, using radio transmitter technology is available at nationalgeographic.com
