Thirteen rowi are today making the long journey from Motuara Island back home to the Okarito Rowi Kiwi Sanctuary on the West Coast.
West Coast Conservator, Mike Slater, said 14 juveniles from the 2003-2004 breeding season were placed on the Marlborough Sounds island to allow them to grow in a predator-free environment.
The 14th kiwi on the island was not captured this morning as it had dropped its radio transmitter. A DOC ranger with a kiwi tracking dog has remained on the island today to locate it.
“Its not a problem as we know if we don’t locate it today we will likely find it with the chicks from this season during one of our routine checks,” Mr Slater said.
Their weights range from 1.35kg to 2.11kg which puts them all above the required stoat-proof weight need to return to the sanctuary.
