The decomposing remains of a North Island Brown kiwi have been found in an illegally set possum trap.

DOC ranger Rod Warne with dead kiwi.  Photo: DOC. The trapped kiwi was found by Department of Conservation staff during routine work within Ohope Scenic Reserve. The reserve is the core area of the Whakatane kiwi recovery project being carried out by the Department in conjunction with the Bank of New Zealand Kiwi Recovery Trust, Environment Bay Of Plenty, Rainbow Springs, Ngati Awa, Forest and Bird and the Whakatane District Council.
