History was made today when six North Island brown kiwi returned to the Pukaha/Mount Bruce forest.
It is the first time in New Zealand historto an area from where they have become extinct. Kiwi were last seen in the area more than 100 years ago.
The transfer of kiwi from the New Zealand Conservation Trust at Willowbank Wildlife Reserve in Christchurch to Pukaha/Mount Bruce has been made possible through a breeding programme at Willowbank and intensive pest control at Pukaha.have been returned to an area from where they have become extinct. Kiwi were last seen in the area more than 100 years ago.
