Lynette Denton is a dedicated kiwi watcher. She has to be as her work involves going ‘bush’ once a week, no matter what the weather.

As part of Bank of New Zealand Kiwi Recovery, Lynette is looking at how forestry management affects kiwi living in the Waitangi Endowment Forest, a 500 hectare area of pines managed by DoC on behalf of the Crown. And it’s quite a process finding out. First the kiwi living near areas that are due to be logged have to be found using a dog trained to find kiwi. A transmitter is then attached to each bird’s leg so that they can be located easily using a radio receiver.
