Today research and management teams are increasingly confident about their ability to save kiwi.
However, it is not yet time to relax - kiwi will not survive without our continued help and vigilance.
Some work is already underway, and further information is available on how iwi, private landowners and local communities can get involved in protecting kiwi and their habitats at Kiwis Helping Kiwi.
What Has Happened so Far
A number of information and education resources have been created to increase people’s awareness and encourage them to get involved in protecting kiwi. These include:
Some parts of the county have also had kiwi advocates at work, and their efforts have helped community and iwi involvement reach exceptional levels.
One outcome was the creation of the Kuaotunu Kiwi Sanctuary on the Coromandel Peninsula in 1996. This sanctuary is New Zealand's biggest community-based kiwi initiative, and there are now many others following in its footsteps.
