Bank of New Zealand Save the Kiwi Trust
Bank of New Zealand Save the Kiwi
In November 2002 the Prime Minister of New Zealand launched the Bank of New Zealand Save the Kiwi Trust.
This fully independent and registered charitable trust is a partnership between one of New Zealand’s major financial institutions, the Bank of New Zealand, and the Department of Conservation.
Its aim is to work with iwi, communities and conservation groups in a combined effort to once again fill New Zealand’s night air with the calls of kiwi – crreeeeee.
Bank of New Zealand Save the Kiwi Trust builds on 11 years of success by what was the ‘Kiwi Recovery Programme.’ This began in 1991 to prevent the extinction of kiwi on mainland New Zealand. Both the Bank and Department of Conservation were involved with the programme, along with the New Zealand Royal Forest and Bird Society.
Today, it is amazing to think how little we knew about the kiwi back when the programme was launched in 1991. We did not really know how many there were, where they lived, or what threatened their survival. Thanks to the last 11 years’ of work we can now answer all these questions and more, and we now working toward the three long-term goals of:
· Increasing the kiwi population
· Increasing the number places that kiwi live
· Maintaining the genetic diversity of the kiwi species and sub-species
· What the Bank of New Zealand Save the Kiwi Trust is aiming to do
· Its Trustees
· The Bank of New Zealand Save the Kiwi Trust’s Corporate Partner Programme
· How communities can access funding from the Bank of New Zealand Save the Kiwi Trust
