Although the Haast Tokoeka can be found near sea level, they are a mountain-loving bird and reach their highest population density at the bushline and at the fertile base of mountain slopes. |

Some Haast Tokoeka spend the whole year in sub-alpine grasslands, up to 1500 metres high, digging their burrows in snow when it covers the ground.

The Haast Tokoeka is Extremely Rare The Haast Tokoeka was only identified as a distinct variety in 1993 and, like the Rowi, is extremely rare and classified as nationally critical. Its population is estimated to be just 300 birds, based on surveys in the Haast, Olivine and Selbourne ranges and in the Arawhata, Waiatoto, Okuru and Haast river valleys. Most live in the Haast Range, in south-west New Zealand.
The Haast Tokoeka has distinctive rufous plumage and down-curved bills.
