About the Bird

The kiwi, New Zealand’s most ancient bird, is a fitting national icon. It is a unique bird in a unique place.

Not only does the bird’s special characteristics contribute to New Zealand’s special biodiversity, its quirkiness suits Kiwi culture.

In this section we look at the characteristics that combine to make the kiwi so special.

And we look at where it lives – the New Zealand archipelago in the south Pacific Ocean.  The birth and development of this island nation has a lot to do with how the kiwi came about.

You can see kiwi in captivity and in the wild. Look in our Information Toolkit under See Kiwi Here.
